Maintaining Wooden Patio Furniture

Maintaining Wooden Patio Furniture

Wooden Patio furniture is known for its timeless elegance and beauty. While it is a popular choice based on its aesthetic appeal and durability, it requires regular maintenance like any other piece of furniture.

With winter on its way in South Africa, there is no better time to safeguard your outdoor furniture. However, regardless of the weather, maintaining your patio furniture ensures many years of beautiful outdoor furniture.

Here are some tips for keeping the beauty in your wooden patio furniture.

FURNITURE COVERS

Furniture covers can make caring for your outdoor furniture a lot easier. Particularly during the seasons when you spend less time outdoors. Furniture covers provide protection from rain, wind as well as damaging UV light from the sun.

Patio furniture covers come in a range of sizes and shapes. These include small covers which are designed to fit a single chair or table or larger covers which are designed to fit an entire outdoor dining set.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR WOODEN PATIO FURNITURE

When choosing wooden furniture, the best pieces are made of solid, rot-resistant wood. Despite this, your furniture is not resistant to molds, mildew or to dirt. Wooden patio furniture requires regular maintenance, even more so in harsher climates.

Mildew and mold occur when the wood is left wet, waterlogged or untreated. The simplest way to combat any of these is to brush surfaces with a mixture of warm water and dish soap, or a mild bleach diluted in water. Once surfaces are clean, leave the furniture in full sun to dry completely.

For general cleaning, use a damp cloth soaked in a mixture of water and a mild soap. Avoid using pressure washers as this can remove softwood between grain lines and force water into the wood.

HOW TO WEATHERPROOF WOODEN PATIO FURNITURE

Throughout the year, your outdoor wooden furniture endures the harsh South African weather conditions. From frosty winters to the scorching summer sun, the harsh extremes of all the seasons play an integral part in the lifespan of patio furniture.

There are many methods available when it comes to weatherproofing your wooden patio furniture. However, it is best to use methods that best suit the conditions your furniture will be left in as well as the type of wood it is made of. TREATMENT FOR WOOD

Wood that is left untreated and completely exposed to the elements is inclined to lose its structural integrity, specifically heavy rain and harsh sunny conditions. Over time the wood will begin to fade as the protective sealants and/or varnish are weathered away.

Ensure regular treatment of your furniture with the correct sealant to prevent fading and keep your patio furniture looking its best.
