Maintaining Metal Patio Furniture

Maintaining Metal Patio Furniture

Metal patio furniture is well known for its sturdy build and elegant aesthetics. However, certain types of metal are prone to a degree of wear and tear. This makes it important to carry out the correct maintenance best suited for each type of metal.

WROUGHT IRON

Wrought iron stands as one of the most popular choices when choosing outdoor furniture sets. This particular metal can withstand exposure to the most extreme weather conditions and as it is heavy, there is very little chance of it being knocked over by a gust of wind.

Despite its durability, wrought iron is not resistant to rust. Over time, it's top coating of paint may begin to chip away, leaving the underlying metal exposed. Should this spot be left untreated it will rust. In the event that you do find some rust, it is recommended to clean the area with soapy water before sanding it down and sealing it with a matching topcoat.

As for general cleaning, furniture can be wiped down with a damp cloth.

ALUMINIUM

Aluminium furniture has grown in popularity over the years due to its varying style choices and low maintenance. It is weatherproof and doesn’t retain as much heat when left out on those scorching hot days. This makes it a good option for patio furniture either at the pool or close to the sea. An added bonus is that it is lightweight and easy to move around whenever you choose to do so.

Although aluminium cannot rust, it is prone to oxidising and corroding. Like wrought iron, it is of the utmost importance to touch up any chipped paint and seal the exposed metal.

When cleaning, use non-abrasive materials to remove dust or dirt. For a little extra protection and shine, a light coating of car wax can be applied to aluminium surfaces. This helps with the prevention of corrosion and oxidisation.

STEEL

Aesthetically, stainless steel presents you with an air of luxury and glamour. Known for its strength and stability, stainless steel patio furniture is not easily bent or dented, unlike Aluminium. It is best suited for larger pieces that may bear a lot of weight. Steel patio furniture is heavy and will not blow away in strong winds. However, this does make it difficult to move around.

When it comes to maintenance, stainless steel is very easy to preserve. Like all metal patio furniture, it is essential to prevent rust. Luckily, stainless steel is more resistant to rust as compared with other metals such as wrought iron. Apart from rust, rain can cause grease and streaks but both can easily be removed with the use of a soft damp cloth and white vinegar. However, when using vinegar ensure that you rinse the furniture thoroughly afterwards.

Metal furniture is a good investment for your patio. However, as mentioned the correct care is needed to ensure your furniture lasts thereby getting your monies worth. Here at Creative Living, we offer a beautiful selection of durable furniture, all available on our site.
